How to use a custom search engine in Firefox

Firefox has no option in the settings to import a custom search engine URL. You could use the bookmark and keyword feature, but that’s counter-intuitive and annoying. Mozilla, please fix.

This tutorial is based on Dave M’s post on the superuser forum.

  1. Open a new tab and type in:
about:config
  1. Type the following in the search box:
browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh
  1. Click on the + symbol on the right side. The window should now look like this:
  1. Enter the following in the address bar to access the search settings:
about:preferences#search
  1. The “Search Shortcuts” section should now show a new “Add” button in the bottom right:
  1. Press the “Add” button and fill in the name and search URL containing a %s in place of the search term. A couple of examples:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%s

https://search.vyrm.in/search?q=%s

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s
  1. Navigate to the “Default Search Engine” section near the top of the settings and select the engine you just added.

Note that this does not work for search engines that use POST requests, such as in the default SearXNG configuration. Head to the preferences tab and select “GET” in the privacy tab.
